INVITATION
Meet the Author
Sebastian Gerard

For Goodness Sake:
A Novel of the Afterlife of Suzie Wong
~ a love story with Hong Kong as a “character” ~

Designing Hong Kong invites you to a gathering with Sebastian Gerard, author of the newly published novel For Goodness Sake: A Novel of the Afterlife of Suzie Wong on Friday, 18 April 2008 at The Fringe Club.

For Goodness Sake, Gerard's first full-length novel, takes its inspiration from the 1960 movie, The World of Suzie Wong and brings the story to the contemporary period, on the eve of the handover of Hong Kong back to China. For the author, Suzie Wong's story is not only about the lore of Hong Kong, but in its way a cross-cultural love story that is a metaphor for Hong Kong's very destiny.

Hong Kong itself, in For Goodness Sake, is very much a character, a "cast member" whose complex persona ranges from Central and SoHo, to Wanchai, to Sheung Wan, a part of the city that the narrator-protagonist, Professor Marco Podesta considers to be the true, indigenous, Hong Kong, a place Gerard refers to as "Cantoville". The city is never "out of frame," present throughout this new novel in molar and molecular dimensions, and its plans policies, architecture and urban design very much elements of this story.

Sebastian Gerard, in an earlier professional incarnation, was a professor of planning, urbanism and media for three decades. Gerard frequently visits Hong Kong and Hong Kong's urbanism has inspired him to write this novel. As an urbanite, he loves, and is inspired by, Hong Kong, but as an urbanist, he worries about the city.
