How to ease congestion at Tai Tam Tuk reservoir? There is a problem at the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir Dam – vehicles have gotten bigger. Regularly oncoming drivers are unable to pass each other. The result is traffic jams along Tai Tam Road which can take a long time to unwind. The narrow road on top of the historic dam can’t be widened. Concerns are regularly raised in the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Southern District Council. However, the Transport Department is reluctant to control traffic using lights at both ends of the 400 metres long dam as this would result in long and overlapping red light signals. The Police does not have the resources to station manual traffic controllers. The use of Tai Tam Road is already restricted for heavy goods vehicles during peak hours. A more radical restriction would be to limit the use of the dam to small vehicles only. Or possibly ‘smart city ideas’ should be explored, such as readers which recognize larger vehicles and activate traffic warnings and signals as needed. To start a dialogue, M Co Design and BuroHappold have posted a plan for a second link across the Tai Tam Tuk reservoir. The designers explain how the existing road would cater for vehicles in one direction, and the new link for vehicles in the other direction. The bridge would also cater for cyclists and would allow hikers to walk around the reservoir, completing the Tai Tam Tuk Heritage trail. They recognize that construction would have to be done carefully to limit the impact on the drinking water, the country park and the historic dam. They believe that intelligent design can address many of the concerns. What is your view? Click here for the proposal. Click here for the survey.

M Co Design and BuroHappold
