Urban Thinkers Campus Preparatory Workshop: New Territories Tomorrow: Challenges and Opportunities
Date: Saturday, 16 March 2019 Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm Venue: AITBuilding, The Chinese University of Hong Kong The Urban Studies Programme at CUHK and Designing Hong Kong, both Associate Members of the World Urban Campaign are hosting a preparatory workshop for the Third Urban Thinkers Campus. The World Urban Campaign, coordinated by the UN-Habitat, is to rally all stakeholders to the same cause: making cities liveable and sustainable. It aims at engaging all who have a potential to articulate pressing urban issues, propose solutions and commit to shared goals and actions towards realising the New Urban Agenda. In its 2018 Policy Address, government has announced the “Lantau Tomorrow Vision” project which includes the construction of artificial islands with a total area of about 1,780 hectares. In February, the government of the HKSAR accepted the land supply options recommended by the Taskforce on Land Supply which also include development of brownfields and private agriculture land in the New Territories. The built-up area of Hong Kong makes up 24.3% of land and discounting country parks and other conservation areas (47%), the city has some 29% of its land (mostly in the New Territories) for alternative uses. Hence Hong Kong needs a “New Territories Vision” too! We will be using the SIX THINKING HATS as a planning tool to facilitate stakeholders to collaboratively identify issues related to developments in the New Territories. In our previous workshop, participants agreed on principles for good planning of the future of Hong Kong. They called for inter-disciplinary and interdepartmental coordination of regional planning, as well “Small is beautiful” with localised planning and early involvement of urban designers to promote diverse neighbourhoods, for a people-centric, environmentally friendly, sustainable and resilient city. Please join us to build on this. For details and registration, please visit: http://web5.arch.cuhk.edu.hk/urbandesign/urbanthinkers2019.html
