The Deck
Hong Kong is a compact city. Various districts are dominated by multi-layered pedestrian networks. In Central, high-capacity road infrastructure forces pedestrians to use elevated routes connecting all different modes of public transport, including ferries, buses, minibuses, trains, and private vehicle parking and drop-offs. The elevated pedestrian network offers access to offices, shopping, cinemas, toilets, gardens and more. Immediately south of this ‘deck’, life is predominantly at street level. How do we see the future of Central? How can we enhance ‘The Deck’ as a living, working, visitor and recreational destination?
Job description and responsibilities:
- Conduct research, collect and analyze data
- Reach out to different stakeholders
- Assist field studies and conduct interviews
- Develop concepts for enhancement of the Deck
Preferences / requirements:
- Minimum 2 days per week during the internship period
- English and Chinese writing skills
- Keen interest in urban planning / design thinking
- Active and ready to participate
- Independent
- Able to work outdoors and hike

Drink Without Waste
Drink Without Waste is an initiative led by the Single-Use Beverage Packaging Working Group, a coalition of beverage manufacturers and importers, waste handlers and recyclers, institutions, retailers and NGOs in Hong Kong focused on reducing waste from beverage consumption. Established in September 2017, we seek to reduce the volume of used beverage packaging going to waste by 70 to 90% in 2025. See https://drinkwithoutwaste.org/
We are looking for interns! Minimum 2 days per week of 3 months (32 days in total) with flexible working hours. Tasks are adjustable to the needs of the project and the talents and interests of applicants. We are seeking assistance with campaigning and projects.
Communications and Outreach (Vacancy: 1)
The intern will work closely with our campaign team to support our campaign to address the issue of beverage packaging waste in a communications role. This will include creating content and outreach to increase participation in recycling. The intern will learn how an NGO works with different stakeholders and prepare them for future campaign works.
Duties:
• Support beverage packaging reduction and recovery activities
• Assist in the development, promotion, and implementation of outreach strategies
• Create content for social media, newsletters, and press releases
• Engage project stakeholders and outreach to property management companies and other potential campaign partners
• Job requires outdoor site visits tasks
Requirements:
• Non-first year university students majoring in Journalism, Media, Communications, Marketing, Environmental Science, Urban Studies, or related disciplines would be preferred
• Excellent communication and organization skills
• Good knowledge in sustainability/ recycling industry/ current waste policies and waste management strategies
• Experience with organizing content, campaigns or events is a plus
• Skills in graphic design and video editing are a plus
Projects (Vacancy: 2)
The intern will work closely with our project team to support community recycling projects. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work in the office and out in the field. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in environmental issues and willing to gain practical experience working on projects that inform strategies and government policy.
Duties
• Support beverage packaging reduction and recovery activities
• Conduct research related to waste management issues in Hong Kong
• Assist in field studies and interviews with beverage companies/ recycling industry stakeholders
• Assist in the operation and reporting for community recycling projects with field surveys, data collection and management
Requirements
• Non-first year university student majoring in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Policy or related disciplines would be preferred
• Excellent verbal communications skills in English and Chinese
• Good knowledge of sustainability/ circular economy/ current waste policies and waste management strategies
• Proficient in Excel and Word
• Willingness to work outdoors for fieldwork occasionally, experience in outreach or conducting field studies will be a plus
